As some of you may know, the editors of this blog enjoy works of art, especially the landscapes of the great dutch masters. Currently I am digging my way through several volumes of the dutch History Magazine "Spieghel Historiael" and I found a reference to the works of the Flemish Master of the small landscapes. Fortunatly his etchings are preserved and can be found in musea and online here.

Enjoy the Sunday!

Staten van Oorlog ~ Financial records of the States' Army

Two pictures from the 'Staten van Oorlog' from the year 1666 as a result of my first 'official' visit to the Groninger Archives. These are copies made from the originals in the Hague, and show the composition of the States' Army, and how they were to be paid by each Province (the so-called 'Repartition system'). This is part 2 of the lists, showing a great need for men in the second Anglo-Dutch war. The first pic hints the financial and political power of the Province of Holland, as they paid the most.

The second picture, again a test-case for my new cell phone camera, shows a list of troops to be paid by Stad en Lande, as Groningen was called then. Clearly visible are names like Gockingha, Broersma and Clandt.

Many thanks to the friendly and helpful people of the Archives!

BTW, Staat van Oorlog is also the title of this book, in dutch.

Groningen Bouttats 1674

Groeningen, the Capital of the Landscape of Groeningen and the Ommelanden (lit: surrounding land) , lays on the river Schuytendiep, three large miles from Delfs-Ziel, and six from Leeuwaerden, it is a well inhabited Town, with rich houses and beautiful manors, who thrive in trade, and have great freedom from their Rulers, doing Civil and criminal justice, without any preceding permissions. In the year 1580, the Count of Rennebergh, secured the town for the King of Spain; though it came into possession of the United Provinces by Prince Maurice; they enlarged the city in the year 1614, and with 17 bulwarks and deep moats it was strengthened. In the year 1672 it was besieged by the Bishops of Kur Cologne and - Munster on the 9. of Juli, but they had to leave the town, which was destroyed for a third by hot bullets or otherwise, the 17th of August of the same year.

Thoneel der Steeden ~ Showcase of cities in the Netherlands

For those who like pictures of cities and towns, and especially for those who like dutch and flemish cities and towns, the works of Caspar Bouttats from Antwerp are a must. His book 'Thoneel der Steeden', gives various pictures of towns and fortresses of the Republic, with amusing (and sometimes wrong) accompanying texts, and wierd perspectives. Nice pictures of farmers, city-dwellers and noblemen and -women.

Bommen Berend ~ The bombing Bishop

~

We were very pleased to recieve the master paper of historian drs Krijvenaar on the transition of the States' Army to the Batavian Army around the year 1795. This is of course a very interdsting subject of it's own, but thanks to the sound introduction we can also learn a lot on the States' Army from the 16th and 17th century.

One of the sources listed was a book called Histories of our times, concerning the State and the Wars', by the Frisian history writer and politician Lieuwe van Aitzema (I must point out that the dutch wiki is quite more elaborate than the english one, which fails ro mention that Aitzema was a spy for the english in the first and second Anglo-Dutch war, and that some of his books were banned), a series of books continued by Lambert van den Bosch, also known as Lambertus Sylvius.

The reader can find the book here on google books, and I took the liberty to reproduce one of the pages, plus a rather neat print of the Bishop of Munster, Bernard van Galen/Bernhard von Galen, who is (sort of) honoured in Groningen by a musical.

Aitzema's book gives a lot of info, ranging from court gossip, tax publications, to the mention of dutch captains of colonels who were convicted for treason.

New York 1673

~

From the earlier mentioned dutch book on the campaign in the America's a plate from the Bodel Nijenhuis Collection (Library of the University of Leyden) on the attack on New York, next a list of ships, crew and marines aboard the ships, and finally a list of equipment. The book, published by the Linschoten Society can be read on line here.

Shomette & Haslach, Raid on America

Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!

~

'Raid on America' is an american book on one of the most succesfull military campaigns in 1672: a Province of Zeeland ordered campaign aganst the English and French in the America's. Thorough (as it's based on an excellent dutch book called 'De Zeeuwsche Expeditie naar de West') and a good read on the campaign that led to the retaking of New Amsterdam.

Happy New Year!
